Aside from pumpkins, leaves changing colour and the extra hours’ sleep this month, October is also Tyre Safety Month and is run by charity TyreSafe to raise awareness about the importance of tyre maintenance and the dangers of defective and illegal tyres. The campaign encourages motorists to check their tyre pressure, tread depth (using the 20p coin test), and overall condition to improve road safety, reduce the risk of accidents, and save money on fuel and tyre replacement.
A robust tyre management system is essential for all operators, regardless of the industry. According to Tyre Safe, on average 153 people are killed or seriously injured in incidents related to defective tyres. Another alarming statistic is that over 6 million UK tyres annually have illegal tread!
The DVSA’s Guide to Maintaining Roadworthiness was last updated in April 2025 which includes a section on what constitutes a robust tyre management system. Amongst other things, the guide issues updated recommendations in respect of the age of tyres, what checks must be done as part of the safety inspection process and the torque requirements.
