Seat belt reminder from DVSA for bus and coach operators

The DVSA have issued a short reminder to operators with  useful reference information as the new school term begins which we summarise below.

When it comes to passenger safety, wearing a seat belt helps to prevent serious injury or death in the event of an accident.

In December 2023, the DVSA shared a reminder about your responsibility as operator when it comes to seat belts.

They want to send another reminder as the new year begins, and also clarify their previous message.

It is an operator’s responsibility to take all reasonable steps to tell passengers to wear a seat belt if there’s one fitted.

Ways to tell passengers  – You can do this by:

  • getting the driver to make an announcement, when passengers get on the vehicle;
  • playing an audio or visual presentation;
  • putting up signs at each seat;
  • a combination of the above measures.
