New tachograph rules for LGVs from July 2026

The DVSA has issued a correction to guidance sent earlier today regarding upcoming tachograph requirements for light goods vehicles (LGVs) operating between the UK and EU.

From 1 July 2026, LGVs over 2.5 tonnes used for international hire and reward journeys between the UK and EU must be fitted with a Smart Tachograph 2.

This means that if you are being paid to drive an LGV over 2.5 tonnes between the UK and EU from this date onwards, the vehicle must have a tachograph installed and operators must comply with the assimilated drivers’ hours rules to remain compliant.

When the rules do not apply

A Smart Tachograph 2 is not required if:

  • The vehicle is being used internationally for the driver or operator’s own account, and driving is not the driver’s main activity
  • The vehicle weighs more than 2.5 tonnes but less than 3.5 tonnes and is operating only within the UK

What operators need to do

Operators affected by the changes should take action before 1 July 2026.

The DVSA says the average lead time for tachograph fitting appointments is currently around 4 to 6 weeks, so businesses are encouraged to plan ahead to avoid delays.
