The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has highlighted that incidents involving moving vehicles remain one of the leading causes of fatal and serious injuries in UK workplaces.
According to the latest HSE figures for 2025/26, 24 workers lost their lives after being struck by a moving vehicle.
In many cases, they are preventable through effective planning, suitable traffic management and proper training.
Managing the risks
Every employer has a legal duty to ensure that workplace transport activities are managed safely. Simple and practical measures employers can take include:
- Separating pedestrians and vehicles wherever possible.
- Providing clearly defined traffic routes and pedestrian walkways.
- Using suitable signage, barriers, and speed controls.
- Ensuring vehicles are properly maintained and fit for purpose.
- Training drivers and vehicle operators and ensuring they remain competent.
- Regularly reviewing workplace transport arrangements and carrying out risk assessments.
