DfT grant scheme – audio/visual equipment for rail replacement services

This update, shared via UKCOA following a Department for Transport (DfT) announcement, outlines a new grant scheme to support coach operators purchasing audio-visual equipment for use on rail replacement services.

The DfT has introduced funding to assist coach operators in purchasing portable audio-visual equipment designed to provide clear audible and visual passenger information. The equipment is intended to support compliance with Accessible Information Regulations (AIR) and can be transferred between vehicles, offering flexibility across fleets.

Key points of the scheme:

  • Applies to eligible equipment purchased from 9 June onwards and is expected to run for around six months
  • Applications are expected to open towards the end of June (with a confirmed date yet to be announced), however eligible purchases made from 9 June will still be able to be included in an application
  • Funding is provided on a reimbursement basis after purchase
  • Grants may cover up to 75% of eligible costs, subject to criteria and funding limits
  • Maximum support is £2,000 (excluding VAT) per equipped vehicle
  • Both established and new-to-rail-replacement operators may be eligible, with variation in support levels
  • Permanent installations and fixed vehicle modifications are not included

Operators are advised to check full eligibility requirements before purchasing equipment, as funding is subject to scheme conditions and reimbursement rules. You can read the full DfT information sheet here: Fact Sheet

This initiative is part of wider efforts to strengthen accessibility and improve consistency of passenger information across rail replacement operations.
