Introduction of Clean Air Zones to be postponed

The introduction of Clean Air Zones (CAZs) across the country is expected to be delayed until at least January 2021.

In letters from Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Minister, Rebecca Pow, to organisations including the Freight Transport Association and from the Joint Air Quality Unit to stakeholders, it has been confirmed that the introduction of CAZs will be postponed until after the COVID-19 response.

Both letters confirm that the initiative will not be put on hold indefinitely and will still be introduced, most likely in 2021, in order for the Government to deliver on its obligation to improve air quality.

It is hoped the postponement will allow operators more time to retrofit or upgrade their fleets to meet the CAZ requirements.
