Time for an autumn audit: Make sure your systems are ready

As the days get shorter and operations head into the busy winter months, now is the time for an autumn audit – not just of vehicles, but of your entire compliance framework.

During our recent BACK on Air webinar, the team discussed how this time of year offers the perfect opportunity to pause and take stock. It’s about making sure your systems, contracts, and maintenance routines are working as they should before the next compliance inspection or DVSA visit does it for you.

That means checking more than just tyre tread and brake efficiency. Review your Vehicle Operator Licence (VOL) undertakings, are maintenance intervals still realistic for your workload? Are tyre checks, defect reporting, and driver training up to date? Small lapses now can lead to big problems later.

An autumn audit also extends beyond the workshop. Take a look at your contracts, employment terms, supplier agreements, maintenance contracts, and ensure everything reflects current working practices. As our employment team highlighted, even informal changes in roles or hours can alter the legal position if they’re not properly documented. A quick internal review now can save you from disputes or compliance headaches down the line.

The goal isn’t simply to complete a checklist, it’s to have systems that are reliable and effective when you need them most. Before winter adds extra pressure, make sure your compliance, maintenance, and HR processes are fully aligned, documented, and up to date.
