HGV operators – are you up to date on your plates? New DVSA digital system goes live

From 20 March 2023, the DVSA will issue heavy vehicle and trailer plating certificates and trailer entry into service letters digitally. The rationale behind the change is that digital copies will be distributed more quickly than sending by post.

Operators will need to print a copy of the applicable document once it has been emailed to them. You will also be able to ask for a paper copy in the post as an alternative. Remember to ensure that the plate meets all the relevant legal requirements – i.e. the plate must be:

  • securely fixed
  • legible at all times
  • in a noticeable and readily accessible position
  • in the cab of the vehicle (if it has one).
