Sharon Clelland has been appointed as the new Traffic Commissioner for Scotland, taking up the role on 6 April 2026.
Ms Clelland joins the post from her previous role as Head of Legal Services at the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (PIRC), the independent body responsible for overseeing policing in Scotland. She succeeds Claire Gilmore, who resigned in May 2024, leaving the position vacant for nearly two years.
Kevin Rooney welcomed the appointment, noting: “Sharon brings significant insight from her experience in law enforcement and the emergency services, which will be used to great effect in our efforts to improve road safety.”
Her tenure is expected to emphasise compliance, governance, and public safety, ensuring transport operators maintain the high standards required under Scottish road transport law.
Backhouse Jones will be monitoring developments and providing guidance on any changes affecting operators and compliance requirements.
