Let's talk

Environmental Social Governance

BACKing responsibility

At Backhouse Jones, we believe responsible business goes beyond legal expertise. Our approach to Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) reflects our commitment to acting ethically, supporting our people and clients, and minimising our impact on the world around us.

We understand the importance of accountability, transparency and sustainability. ESG principles guide how we operate day-to-day, how we treat people, and how we make decisions for the long term.

Our ESG commitments

Acting responsibly and ethically

We are committed to the highest professional standards and to conducting ourselves with openness, honesty and integrity always. Good governance underpins everything we do, supported by clear policies, effective systems and a culture that encourages accountability.

All members of staff have a role to play in meeting our ESG objectives and are encouraged to raise concerns or suggest improvements. In line with our Whistleblowing Policy, we actively encourage staff to speak up about any real or perceived departures from the ethical standards we set.

A positive and supportive working environment

Our people are our most important resource. We are committed to creating a positive, healthy and inclusive working environment where everyone is treated fairly and with respect.

We promote equality and diversity, provide access to training and development, and support rewarding careers with job satisfaction. Clear guidance on expectations, rights and development is set out within our internal policies and procedures.

Our clients and communities

We are committed to delivering a high level of professional, courteous and accessible service to all clients. We recognise the diversity of the communities we serve and, wherever possible, seek to promote equal access to our legal services.

Beyond our client work, we aim to make a positive contribution to the local communities in which we operate.

Responsible suppliers and partners

We act fairly and transparently in our dealings with suppliers and third parties. We are committed to equality and diversity in our professional relationships, entering clear and fair contracts and settling invoices promptly. Where possible, we seek to support the local economy by working with local suppliers.

Minimising our environmental impact

We are committed to behaving responsibly and reducing our environmental footprint wherever practicable. Our approach focuses on sensible, everyday actions, including:

  • Minimising waste and promoting recycling
  • Using resources efficiently
  • Encouraging walking and cycling where possible
  • Reducing energy use by switching off equipment and lighting when not in use

Oversight and accountability

Our Environmental, Social and Governance strategy is overseen by our nominated officer, Julia Davies, who has overall responsibility for implementing our ESG policy and ensuring the systems and controls we have in place are effective.

Our ESG policy is reviewed at least annually to ensure it remains effective, relevant and aligned with our values.
