Birmingham’s Clean Air Zone officially came in on 1 June 2021, but there was a delay to the start of the charging system to allow motorists time to adjust. From 00:00 BST on 14 June 2021, drivers of a vehicle not meeting emission standards, and without an exemption, will face a daily fee.
The zone covers all the roads within the A4540 Middleway Ring Road and operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The circular road itself is outside of the zone.
The charges for vehicles that do not meet the minimum emission standards are: £8 for cars, vans and taxis; or £50 for HGVs and coaches.
The zone is enforced using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR). The ANPR records the registration plates of vehicles travelling within the ring road. Anyone who fails to pay within six days after entering the zone faces a £120 fine.
Vehicles will only pay once for each day they enter the zone and can move into and out of the zone during that day without having to pay additional charges.
