Backhouse Jones is delighted to announce that Steven Meyerhoff, legal director, has been listed in this year’s Hot 100. With many hundreds of names in the frame, the annual survey by The Lawyer recognises the most adventurous, innovative and dynamic lawyers and barristers in the UK. To make the country’s top 100 is an incredible achievement.
Why Steven?
When talking ‘Hot’ we say Steven is scorching! His legal skill in navigating the road for the RHA in the previous 12-months has been nothing short of visionary. He has spearheaded the renegotiation of the RHAs LFA along with providing a new structure that preserves the interests of both ‘new’ and ‘used’ claimant groups. The new structure required setting up a subsidiary company (RHA Used Trucks Limited (RUTL)), carving out dedicated resource, appointing separate lawyers, expert economists, and the implementation of information barriers both within the RHA, the subclass and Therium Capital Management LLP (the funders).
Already widely reported in legal spheres as a breakthrough litigation case, the recent ruling on 5 August 2024 represents a significant milestone. The claim is the UK’s first ever ‘opt-in’ class action under the new collective actions regime established by the Consumer Rights Act (2015) and significantly is also the first ever collective action to feature a separately represented sub-class of claimants with funding provided by the same funder. Steven is an exceptionally driven and talented lawyer who has demonstrated expert skill navigating frustrating legal hurdles and global turmoil. His legal mastery should be highlighted – he’s certainly our hot stuff!
Richard Smith, Managing Director of the RHA has endorsed the firm’s application, commenting that the “decisions of the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal were bumps in the road that required a significant rethink and restructure of the claim. Steven’s lateral thinking, tenacity, and ability to get multiple stakeholders aligned was instrumental in enabling the RHA to put its best foot forward and satisfy the Competition Appeal Tribunal that the proposed measures were adequate for the CPO to be granted.”
On hearing the announcement, Steven commented “To be recognised by the Lawyer is both truly delightful and humbling. I am a small link in a large and complex chain and each of whom have been first rate and have contributed to the recent success. I am extremely fortunate to work not only with brilliant people but also an exceptional client and I look forward to the period ahead and delivering access to justice to those impacted.”
