Longer semi-trailers (‘LSTs’) are a type of HGV trailer up to 2.05 metres longer than the current standard semi-trailers on the road in the UK. Fully loaded LSTs can move more cargo in fewer journeys than current trailers and reduce overall emissions, congestion, and collision risk. Following an extensive trial, a public consultation and regulatory changes, LSTs are being brought into general use. This guide is aimed at helping operators get the most out of LSTs, as well as ensuring that they are operated safely.
Due to their status as a new vehicle type, LSTs are subject to specific regulations – operators should note that route plans and risk assessments are legally required for each route on which an LST is planned to be used. Furthermore, the Secretary of State is legally required to be notified by operators of the prospective use of LSTs through the Traffic Commissioner VOL portal. Operators are also required to ensure that drivers are given copies of the route plans and risk assessments for the routes they drive on. Each of these areas is covered in more detail in this guide.
Responsible LST operators should also provide appropriate training and have processes to maintain safety. This will also help to maintain the appropriate use of LSTs, which the trial has demonstrated provide significant economic benefits to operators.
