A robust tyre management system is essential for all operators and should never be underestimated. According to the charity Tyre Safe, over one particular five-year period, 5,375 casualties were caused due to tyre related incidents. Furthermore, when tyre pressure is 6 psi below the recommended inflation, it is estimated that 3% more fuel is used.
Recently, the DVSA has revised the guide to maintaining roadworthiness as regards tyre management. Its approach is to take a risk- based approach to tyre management. Amongst other things, the guide issues updated recommendations in respect of the age of tyres and safety inspection intervals based on your tyre operation.
