The DVSA have recently updated their guidance in relation to HGV daily walkaround checks. This means what you need to check inside and outside of the vehicle when you do a lorry or other HGV walkaround check. The DVSA reiterate that operators and drivers are responsible for making sure the vehicle is safe to drive.
Interestingly, the DVSA identify a number of defects at roadside checks which should have been identified during the walkaround check. This will likely lead to an ‘S’ marked prohibition notice, a Traffic Commissioner Public Inquiry and a DVSA maintenance investigations.
The updated guidance by the DVSA can be found here. As well as the written guidance (including photographs in section 19 (relating to tyres and wheel fixings)), there is also a useful diagram and video available. Furthermore, if English isn’t your first language, it is now available in 22 different languages.
We would urge operators to use these tools as part of their training for for drivers on conducting a walkaround check and of course on how to report their findings to you.
