A while back a number of operators asked us if the cost for ticket machines could be claimed through the COVID-19 Bus Services Support Grant (CBSSG) Restart mechanism in England. At that time, this was not allowed.
The CBSSG does now includes leasing charges for certain new and upgraded ticket machines as one of the allowable costs whilst the CBSSG funding is in place. The reasoning behind this is to encourage the contactless transactions.
We understand at this point that:
- Such leasing costs may be claimed from 10 May 2021.
- The machines need to be new or upgraded and capable of handling contactless payments.
- Unfortunately, the capital cost of purchase of such machines is not yet an allowable cost in respect of the CBSSG.
