The Transport Secretary Grant Shapps has announced that bus, coach and lorry drivers will be able to renew their vocational licences without the need for a medical until further notice.
Usually bus, coach or lorry drivers over the age of 45 must undergo a medical and submit a completed and signed medical examination report (D4 form) along with their licence renewal.
Due to the current strain on the NHS as a result of the coronavirus outbreak, the requirement for a medical report as part of the licence renewal process has temporarily been suspended.
Drivers whose current licence has expired on or after 1 January 2020 or is due to expire in 2020 will be able to obtain a temporary 1-year licence providing they do not have any medical conditions which would mean that their licence would not normally be renewed. Drivers will need to submit a completed D4 form when their licence is due for renewal in 12 months’ time.
Any drivers who have already undergone a medical can still submit a signed D4 form along with their renewal application and their licence would then be valid for the usual 5-year term.
